There are a great number of reasons to attend the State Fair of Texas. The rides, the exhibits, the fantastic displays of windows by a local manufacturer (yes, we’re biased,) but if you like fried food, that’s probably near the top of your list. While its another article for another time, the state fair’s history with fried food goes all the way back to the 30’s, with what is disputed as the popularizing point, if not origin, of corny dogs.
Without further ado, the 2014 Big Tex Choice Award for Best Taste went to the Fried Gulf Shrimp Boil, by Clint Probst. Described as “Everything you would expect in a shrimp boil rolled into a ball!” The item features lemon, red potatoes, onion and baby gulf shrimp fried in a decorative manner.
Most creative went to the Funnel Cake Ale by Justin Martinez. An English Style summer ale brewed to reflect one of the most iconic symbols of state fairs in general, the funnel cake! Of course, it’ll be the Fall before most of us get our hands a on a glass of this, but seeing as how a Texas Fall is like a summer everywhere else, we’ll keep up with a summer beverages.
Of course, we’ll be out there at the Dallas Fair Park everyday, answering your questions about windows, so we’ll make our best to chow our way through the entire list!
